The Healthy Bento Box Lunch
When I was a kid my mother used to make me Bento Box lunches. I can tell you that eating lunch that way was more fun than the traditional American style. It was more of an art form than simply a lunch. I had the privilege of growing up with a Japanese mother. She taught me many things, including how to make sushi and prepare sashimi. Various other traditional dishes were also taught to me.
Still, it was the Bento Box that stood out during my childhood. Japanese chefs are true artists when displaying their food and within households it was no different. The Bento Box was about the display. Even the most mundane foods were transformed into something fun.
We can all learn from this way of eating. Make healthy foods fun! Kids will love it and so will adults. Why do you think McDonald’s Happy Meals are a hit? Because they are fun. Why not do the same with healthier alternatives? Using Bento Boxes will bring forth art and fun to food. When putting together a Bento Box lunch, think creating art rather than simply putting foods in various compartments. Unleash your artistic abilities in order to do so.
Here are a couple of examples:
Think of the various types of healthy foods that you can use to get creative with. And then become the artist of a healthier lunch for you and for others. Remember this, people will do more of what they perceive as fun. That includes eating. If they think that eating healthy is a task they have to do, then they may not do it. Yet, if they think that eating healthy is fun, then they may just do more of it.
By the way, there are many place online that sells Bento Boxes or you can use any container to create your own. Including plastic ones. Traditional Bento Boxes can be bamboo or lacquered. I prefer bamboo myself and it’s more environmentally sustainable.
Now, start creating a fun-filled Bento Box today!
