An important component to weight loss involves hydrating your body. Yes! Water is essential to effective and healthy weight loss. You may have been told that the reason to drink water for weight loss is so that you will feel full…this is true but water’s benefits go way beyond just that. Did you know that water is thermogenic, meaning it helps your body burn fat? It can be your best friend in helping you to lose weight.

Most individuals are walking around, every day with mild dehydration that creates lethargy, fatigue, headaches, joint problems and… hunger pangs – feeling hungry could possibly be mild dehydration.  Have you ever stood in front of the refrigerator and could not quite decide what you were hungry for?  This is a sign you may be mildly dehydrated. The brain confuses mild dehydration with hunger and so that Chunky Monkey ice cream in the freezer is history. So it is up to us to ensure we are adequately hydrated to prevent this from happening. Don’t rely upon thirst as an indicator to drink water – by the time you are thirsty you are already 1-2% dehydrated.

Our body is 70% water and our brain is 80% water. When our cells are dehydrated, cellular function slows down and you end up with the aforementioned symptoms such as fatigue or a headache. Also, when cellular function slows down, so does your metabolism and this results in weight gain.

When you drink water, whether room temperature or chilled, the water is warmed up to body temperature. It is this thermogenic action that helps to burn fat.

I recommend drinking half your body weight in ounces of water. So, for example, if you weight 120 lbs., drink 60 ounces of water a day. Remember that as you lose weight this minimum recommendation will reduce.

If you find it challenging to drink water throughout the day, bring a bottle with you everywhere, put reminder post-it notes where you will see them, use a timer on your phone or other devices to remind you to drink up!

Drinking water is one very effective weight loss tool that will also help take you to optimal health.
