Busy Schedule? Don’t Forget These Key Nutrients

The immune system is in charge of defending the body against damaging microorganisms that cause disease and sickness. Unfortunately, it may fail to succeed in circumstances that are beyond our control. Our immune system depends on the lifestyle choices that we make on a daily basis. It can be strong and healthy, or it can be weak and susceptible to illness. Adhering to a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and steering clear of alcohol, are basic recommendations that people must take into account to stay healthy. The body of the working mom, for example,  is prone to getting ill due to factors such as stress, anxiety, hassle, and tension. Women in general, are more sensitive than men, which is why supplementing their diets with nutritional supplements to improve their immune system may be required. Here are some of the most common supplements to improve immunity.

When an adequate amount of vitamins is present in the human body, the immune system functions a lot more efficiently. However, when these vitamins lack from the body, immunity decreases and the body becomes exposed to all kinds of illnesses and infections. Studies have shown that vitamins B6, A, B12, D, C, folic acid and E, as well as certain minerals like selenium, iron, zinc and copper, can improve function and boost the wellbeing of the immune system. Women’s bodies need increased amounts of iron because the mineral is being lost during menstruation. If you’re going through menopause though, the body will need some more vitamin D; pregnant women must include folic acid supplementation into their diet in order to prevent neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

Fish oil
Supplementing your diet with omega-3s is vital for the health. Often linked to heart health, fish oils can do a lot more than that. The supplements have beneficial effects against a wealth of diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease and inflammation. Some specialists argue that fish oils are the fountain of youth. Apparently, they can slow down the aging process by expanding telomeres, specific DNA segments that shorten as people age. Fish oil supplements improve the body’s immune function after a workout routine, and they can also be taken by women with weakened immune systems. Added benefits of this nutrient:

  • Protects against osteoporosis – a diseases known as brittle bones; it causes damage that leads to disability in women, fractures and disfiguration
  • Protects against breast cancer – research shows that when combined with Propofol omega-3 fish oil prevents cancer cells from becoming malignant tumors
  • Diminishes PMS symptoms
  • Boosts the beauty of the hair and skin – fish oils alleviate uterine cramps, depression, and pain before menstruation. Due to increased contents of eicosapentaenoic acid, omega-3s provide relief to the body; they hydrate and energize the cells, add shine, health, and gloss to the hair and skin.

Calcium supplements keep teeth and bones strong, and it helps blood vessels and muscles expand and contract. The human body needs calcium to stay strong. In adults, particularly in postmenopausal women, calcium becomes a vital supplement. The body starts losing bone density from the early age of 20, and thus calcium is the best way of protecting the bones from becoming brittle, sensitive, and susceptible to osteoporosis. Food sources like dairy products (yoghurt, milk, cheese) and green leafy veggies (kale and broccoli) have increased amounts of calcium in their composition. Supplementation may be required in special circumstances (lactose intolerant individuals for example).

Magnesium maintains normal nerve and muscle function. It keeps the rhythm of the heart steady and it supports a strong, healthy immune system. The nutrient is required for over 300 biochemical reactions that happen inside the body, and deficiency may lead to unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea, excessive vomiting, and migraines. Some added benefits of magnesium:

  • Helps adjust blood sugar levels
  • Keeps the immune system strong and healthy
  • Promotes ordinary blood pressure
  • Manages disorders like cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes

Women need nutritional supplements to have a strong immune system. Working moms in particular, have extremely busy schedules. They don’t have the time to adhere to a healthy diet, which is why they may be suffering from vitamin deficiencies. Nutritional supplements are vital for the human body, and to know exactly what your body needs to stay strong, you should consult with a physician first.
