The Life-Changing Longevity Nutrient

The Life-Changing Longevity Nutrient

Posted by Lori Shemek; January 17, 2022

There is a nutrient that we all have in every cell of our body and it’s called Spermidine…yes it’s name may raise an eyebrow but it is a natural compound, scientifically studied and researched for centuries. This natural nutrient is also found in every cell in our body and in many foods.

Spermidine is one of three natural polyamines such as: spermine and putrescine. The main polyamine in plant-based foods is spermidine. Spermidine itself has been recently shown to be equivalent to that of the anti-aging drug Rapamycin.

Spermidine’s origins go way back. Polyamines have been known for a very long-time as the first one, spermine, was discovered over 330 years ago by microscopic observation of human semen. These polyamines are in every living cell and organism and are critically involved in the maintenance of cellular homeostasis or balance.. this balance is critical to every aspect of optimal health. What we perceive as the body slowing down may in fact be a failure to preserve equilibrium.

Polyamines tends to decrease with age, which is why spermidine acquires a greater importance in an aging population. In fact, research shows that spermidine inhibits five of the nine hallmarks of aging.

And the good news? Supplementation of spermidine exerts a long list of numerous benefits including:

  • Heart Health

  • Brain Health

  • Immunity

  • Longevity

  • Liver Health

  • Enhances Healthy Growth of Hair, Skin and Nails

  • Promotes Abdominal (Visceral) Fat Loss

  • Protects Against Muscle Loss

Healthy and robust mitochondria are essentially the fountain of youth as unhealthy and failing mitochondria that leads to frailty, illness, disease and all effects of the aging body. Mitochondria are the basis of life because they provide cellular energy adenosine triphosphate (ATP). You’ve most likely seen children running around with boundless energy? Children have an abundance of and very healthy mitochondria, This ATP is the currency we use to essentially stay alive. Without healthy mitochondria and a good supply of these tiny organelles in most every cell, we simply would be frail, would decline, become ill and/or lose our life force.

Spermidine is able to stabilize the mitochondrial DNA, a factor that is important in delaying aging because when the mitochondria begin to mutate, it is not optimal and this leads to aging. This is one of the key factors in reducing lifespan in animals and humans.

What is exciting is that research from the The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown that spermidine is linked to increased survival in humans. In fact, recent research has shown that spermidine levels of those in the “Blue Zones” the five areas in the world where we find the greatest number of those who live to be 100 year olds and over, have spermidine levels of a youth. The rest of us, unfortunately, experience a drastic decline in our levels beginning in our mid-twenties.

What is vital for aging slower, brain health and optimal health? Autophagy.

Autophagy: the word’s origin is from the Greek words “auto” meaning self and “phagy” meaning to eat. As we age, the cells accumulate undergo many replications that are not exact and result in damaged parts. This ‘self-eating’ is essentially cellular housekeeping – cleaning cells of toxic material by removing or remodeling all the old, non-functioning parts of cells creating newer, more youthful cells that work optimally. This is why autophagy is an optimal and important anti-aging goal to have as it helps create a younger biological age.

It is important to note that as we age, even the ability of many of our body’s cells to activate autophagy slows down! This critically important process is beneficial to so many areas of health that includes slowing down aging.

Spermidine has the same effects on human cells as intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, caloric restriction, exercise or the ketogenic diet. Essentially, fasting in a pill. One very important benefit of these dietary modalities is autophagy. Autophagy, without utilizing any of these modalities, can be achieved with Spermidine:

The benefits of activating autophagy:

  • Protects our brain from cognitive decline and promotes brain health

  • Promotes new, healthier and more youthful cells

  • Removes old, damaged and dying cells

  • Improves the quality and length of life

  • Promotes mitochondrial health

  • Decreases inflammation

  • Improves immune response

  • Helps protect against cancer

  • Improves gut health and overall digestion

  • Improves skin

  • May support a healthy weight

Spermidine is powerful in that it triggers autophagy without fasting or caloric restriction! However, if you are fasting and use spermidine, you will achieve deeper autophagy.

Is Spermidine From Foods Effective?

You may naturally be wondering if we can get spermidine from the foods we eat. The answer is yes.

Foods spermidine is found in: green pepper, wheat germ, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, aged cheeses, soybean foods such as natto and miso, shitake mushrooms, leafy greens, lentils, and amaranth grain.

However, The amount of spermidine found in foods is simply not adequate to keep up with the decline experienced as we age. The variability in spermidine in plant foods and respectively animal sources can be due to different factors, including their origin, growing conditions, harvesting, cooking practices or storage.

Is very important to note that as we age, specific nutrients we once produced in abundance when we were young such as CoQ10, Glutathione or Alpha Lipoic Acid decline markedly. This includes spermidine. It is vital to protect and maintain our health and vigor as we age.

There is a parallel between declining spermidine levels and the aging human. The decline of spermidine accounts for decreased autophagy and drives the onset of age-associated diseases. As mentioned, spermidine levels decline as we age. This is why it is vital to replenish this natural nutrient as we age. Supplementation of spermidine extends lifespan and health span across species, including in yeast, nematodes, flies and mice. In humans, spermidine levels decrease with aging.

The decline of our youthful energy, lean body and sharp mind does not have to be something you witness, live with each and every day. Science is doing excellent work and the research on spermidine is just one very elegant example of how we can protect and reverse against the effects of the aging human.
